Someone said. The great thing about matchplay is”Every shot pleases someone “

Have you come across the R and A etiquette where no shots are taken on the last if the match is still to be decided. Another great concept like the Sunningdale rules, and the gentleman’s half agreed when both balls are on the eighteenth green in level.

Lovely writing as usual and a beautiful painting at the top, where is the painting of and who painted it.

There are times that I envy your writing so much.I have tried and failed many times to create an article about the life lesson that is golf. This is essay is so true and annoyingly well scripted. I will accept defeat gracefully and walk off the course following a handshake. Well played Sir.

An interesting reflection on education - I shared your lack of commitment but never had the advantage of golf as a schooling alternative, at least, not until it was too late. To get back to my other obsession and quote Melissa again: "From my mother I learned to write prompt thank-you notes for a variety of occasions; from Mrs King's ballroom dancing school I learned a proper curtsy and, believe it or not, what to do if presented with nine eating utensils at the same place setting, presumably at the home of the hosts to whom I had just curtsied. From motorcycles I learned practically everything else" ... or golf ;-)

BTW - I tweeted a link to Joan Didion's essay "Why I write" - sadly it has expired on BBC Sounds but may exist elsewhere - it is worth a search. All the best, R.

Count me in, Richard. A beautiful flow of understandings written with heart & craftsmanship. I love the seemingly random experience of surprise; the unexpected treasures that have been there all along. A partnership for sure!!!
