Nice article with which to start my week end, and it’ll come rushing back to me as soon as I write down a 7 on my card during tomorrow’s medal, and ask myself why on earth I chose to enter - other than to acknowledge those for whom this particular trial is named - Battle of Britain.

In a similar vein...I was taken by the comment from a few years ago that, if in response to "what are the chances?" the answer is "50/50", it really means "I don't know".

Your golf with a friend sounds like a normal day on the golf course for all of us amateurs. The day before you played your socks off and feeling so certain you’ve cracked this beautiful game, and here you are, back on the same tee on the same course and it very quickly shows you, that is never going to happen. So, for approximately three and a half hours you try to smile and enjoy the company you share, wondering where was that person who hit those precise shots from yesterday which ended up with a scorecard you want to savour for ever? Very quickly you say to yourself, it’s “only golf, it’s the taking part not the winning that’s important, but deep inside you, you just want to scream. A few days later, there you are, standing on that first tee on the same course, wondering which golfer will you be today?
