Very enjoyable Richard, again.

Watching Sandy hit his 1-iron off the tee at Muirfield in 1987 made everyone seeing it gasp and mouth something silent to themselves. I can't remember whom he was playing with, but he must've felt totally inadequate.

I had a Ping 1-iron in my teens and remember it being considerably easier to hit than the Mizuno 2-iron it shared a rarely-used section of my bag with.

If only this attitude were more prevalent amongst the thousands of golfers I have met. "Game improvement" and "forgiving" must be two of the mot profitable and least accurate phrases used by manufacturers to describe their clubs. Not much has changed in the skill level required to hit a good golf shot. Good clubs will help you feel when you get it right. Thanks for another great article.

18 holes, 7 clubs (and none that seemed to match), no grips to mention, 2.5 hours, 4 birdies, and reliably stimulating conversation - you have golf nailed, Richard! You choose, very modestly, not to mention that you comfortably beat a man with all the custom fit kit and fancy head covers the world now offers!

Richard, strangely, I seem to be following you around the great courses of Britain, this week I played Travose and was lucky enough to play the new 1st, the day it opened and to make things better I played with Nick Gammon, what a lovely man and what a great golfer. Your recent half bag post struck a cord and thinking of Lee Trevino and his many wise anecdotes on golf. Reminded me of others, Tom Watson always said "golf if not a game of perfect", he would say, as he left the locker room at any event, "I am going out to play bad golf well". Keep posting Richard, so enjoyable and so grounding. Golf the game of life.
